Thyme, Golden
Common Names: Golden Thyme, Lime Thyme
Latin Name: Thymus vulgaris 'Lime'?
General Info
- Not sure if golden and lime is the same. If they are different, not sure which we have. At least the ones I bought were labeled golden I think.
- Give plants a liquid feed during summer to improve growth, flavour and flowering.
Soil Requirements
- well drained slightly alkaline soil.
- doesn't like rich soil.
Water Requirements
Fertilization
- will benefit from a light feeding of a high
potash plant food in spring.
- Feed thyme plants each spring with all-purpose 10-10-10 ratio fertilizer.
Apply it at half-strength to keep the plant from producing too much foliage,
which will diminish the potency of thyme's fragrant oils. Water the plants
thoroughly after feeding to distribute the fertilizer into the soil.
Pruning
- Trim plants after flowering with secateurs or shears to keep them compact and
to promote fresh, new growth.
- Regularly trim a bit/harvest to keep it going healthy. If you don't
prune/trim enough, it will get too woody.
- Cut back thyme plants by one-third in spring after the last frost. Snip the
branches just below where the newest growth emerges. Use clean, sharp floral
snips or pruning shears. Pinch off uneven growth during the summer months to
encourage branching, but cease pruning at least one month before the first
expected autumn frost.
- There are some different pruning strategies, details here: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/herbs/thyme/pruning-thyme-plants.htm
- Hard Rejuvenation – Late fall after first frost
- Light Rejuvenation – After blooming in the summer
- Shaping – Spring
- Harvesting – Anytime during active growth (spring and summer)
