General Info
- Not actually a fern! Just has fern in the common name. It's a prehistoric fern relative called club moss or spike moss.
- Native to China.
- Rises to 18" tall
- Rhizome.
- In 3 years expect a 2' wide groundcover mass.
Soil Requirements
Moist soil, but never soggy. Soil wants plenty of humus. Seems flexible about pH. Lean slightly alkaline (7.4-7.8). Though seems some places say slightly acidic.
Water Requirements
Make the soil moist, but never soggy.
Fertilization
Feed a Selaginella Plant twice a year, once in April and once in July with a water soluble fertilizer diluted to ½ the recommended strength.
Pruning
- Pinch back the tips of the stems of a Selaginella Plant if they grow too tall
or leggy. Pruning a Selaginella stimulates new growth and helps the plant
become bushier. Remove dead or damaged stems from Spike Moss Plants as soon
as they appear.
