Cast-Iron Plants
Common Names: Cast-Iron Plants
Latin Name: Aspidistra elatior
General Info
- Very tolerant of neglect.
- Evergreen, rhizomatous
- Flower is on the ground! Weird little purple thing. Supposed to come in early summer.
- Native to china, japan, himalayas.
- Member of the lily family.
- Plantings of aspidistra look terrible when planted in too much sun, with most of the leaves bleached yellow and turning brown. Pruning will not help this situation -- the problem is too much light. The new leaves will look like the old ones. For best results, move aspidistra to a shadier location with little or no direct sun.
Soil Requirements
Whatever.
Water Requirements
Whatever. If it starts looking sad give it some water.
Fertilization
- Can fertilize in spring-summer every month. one place says once in spring and
once in fall. another says It’s best to fertilize them every 3 to 4 months.
So whatever, we can fertilize it when we think of it.
Pruning
- I guess snip the ones that don't look great in the spring.
- Thin the plant by removing inner branches in the middle of the plant that cross over each other. This will allow more air to circulate and prevent fungal disease.
- Prune to control the size of the plant as necessary by cutting the tallest branches until they are slightly lower than the rest of the foliage. Remove as little foliage as possible to avoid damaging the plant.
